On Complex and Complicated
Developmental work relies on and seeks to see something from the outside: an overview, a real-time shift (/expansion) of the frame to include more points of view or a change in ‘gravity.’
The structure of thinking feels to be at the center of this. We can think of structure as our classification of the nature of things and the strategy we choose (or write) within it.
The complex domain is open-ended, and the interconnectedness of elements overrules its design, whereas, in the complicated domain, design orchestrates interconnectedness.
Complex
Interconnectedness > design
Complicated
Design > interconnectedness
This logical equation might be reductive, but it is useful when we reflect and articulate opportunities for change.
Complexity and complicatedness will come up again.
In the interim, I welcome you to watch this great video on the overview effect.
